Özgül Alper is currently working as a Professor at the Department of Medical Biology and Genetics, Akdeniz University School of Medicine, Antalya, Turkey, with responsibility for medical education and research. She has obtained a Ph.D. degree. She also works on the molecular genetic routine diagnostic tests in a hospital. Prior to joining Akdeniz University, she has worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at NIH/NIDCD for a short term and then joined Georgetown University Hospital, Institute for Human Molecular Genetics, USA, from 2000 to 2004. Since 2004, she has completed national and international collaborative research projects and had several peer-reviewed research articles in the area of human genetics. Her areas of expertise are cancer genetics; molecular mitochondrial genome analysis of tumors; genotype-phenotype correlations; mutational analysis of CFTR, FGFR2, FGFR3, GJB, LDLR, and mitochondrial genes.
