Michael Boy was born in Bamberg, Germany, in 1963. He received a Diploma in physical engineering from the Fachhochschule in Munich in 1992 and a Diploma in meteorology from the Ludwig-Maximillian University in Munich in 1998. In 1998, he started his Ph.D. studies under the supervision of Professor Markku Kulmala at the University of Helsinki, Finland, and received his Ph.D. degree in 2003. In 2004, he got the two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship Award from the Advanced Study Program at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo, USA. For two years, he joined the group of Dr. Alex Guenther, who is a Senior Scientist at NCAR and one of the world leading experts in measuring and modeling the emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds. Two years after his return from NCAR to the University of Helsinki, he established the Atmosphere Modeling Group at the Division of Atmospheric Sciences. Since that time, he is leading the group which currently consists of 10 graduated students.
