Ratna Babu Chinnam received his B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Mangalore University (India) in 1988 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in industrial engineering from Texas Tech University (USA) in 1990 and 1994, respectively. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Department at Wayne State University. Prior to that, he was an Assistant Professor with the Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Department at North Dakota State University from Fall of 1994 to Summer of 2000. He is the author of over 100 technical publications. His publications appeared in such journals as IEEE Transactions on Reliability Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Semiconductor Manufacturing, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, and International Journal of Production Research. His research interests include smart engineering systems, intelligent manufacturing, autonomous diagnostics/prognostics, operations management, and supply chain management. He is currently the Associate Editor for the International Journal of Modeling and Simulation and Advisory Board Member for Scientific Journals International. He regularly serves on several international conference planning and technical committees for such conferences as IJCNN and FUZZ IEEE. His current and past research is funded by such agencies as the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT), and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDoT). He carried out collaborative research with such multinational companies as Ford Motor Company, General Dynamics Land Systems, and DaimlerChrysler and consulted for such companies as Sirius Satellite Radio, Energy Conversion Devices, and Tecton. He is the founding Codirector of the Global Executive PhD Track, the first such engineering track in the USA. He is a Member of Alpha Pi Mu, the Institute for Operations Research and Management Science (INFORMS), and the North American Manufacturing Research Institute (NAMRI).
