Chitra Kannabiran is a scientist in the Department of Molecular Genetics at the L.V. Prasad Eye Institute since 1996. She received her Ph.D. degree from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and held Post-Doctoral Fellowships at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory New York and the University of Medicine and Dentistry at New Jersey, as well as a visiting fellowship at the National Eye Institute, NIH. She is recipient of several grants among which is an international RO1 grant from the NIH under the GRIP program. She was awarded the Andhra Pradesh Scientist Award for 2008 in the field of medical sciences from the Andhra Pradesh State Council for Science and Technology. She serves as Associate Editor for Journal of Genetics since 2008, and a Reviewer of manuscripts in ophthalmic genetics for several journals. Her current research interests are in the molecular genetics aspects of hereditary eye disorders including corneal dystrophies, congenital cataract, retinoblastoma and retinal dystrophies with the goal of identification of genes and genetic variants, genotype-phenotype correlation, and functional analysis of disease causing genes.
