Roland Bitsch received his Ph.D. degree in pharmaceutical chemistry at the University of Marburg, Germany. He finished a postdoctoral fellowship at the Institute for Nutritional Sciences of the University of Bonn, Germany. He is a Lecturer of nutritional sciences and biochemistry and a Professor of nutrition and food sciences at the University of Paderborn, Germany. In August 1989, he was a Visiting Professor at the Thammasat University of Bangkok, Thailand. Since 1993, he has been a Full Professor and the Head of the Department of Human Nutrition at the Institute for Nutritional Sciences of the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, Germany. His research activities include bioavailability and biokinetics of carotenoids and plant phenolics in vivo, assessment of the B-vitamin status in man (thiamine, riboflavin, pyridoxine, biotin), and assessment and evaluation of biomarkers of the antioxidative capacity in man.
