Giovanni Piedimonte is the first Wyeth Research Scholar and the Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at West Virginia University School of Medicine. He also serves as the Physician-in-Chief of the WVU Children’s Hospital in Morgantown and as a founding Director of the WVU Pediatric Research Institute. Dr. Piedimonte received his degree in medicine from the University of Rome School of Medicine in Italy, completed his residency training in pediatrics at the University of California San Francisco, and received fellowship training at the Cardiovascular Research Institute of the University of California San Francisco and at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He holds certifications in general pediatrics and in pediatric pulmonology from the American Board of Pediatrics. Dr. Piedimonte has (co)authored over 280 journal articles, book chapters, monographs, editorials, and abstracts with the primary focus on airway inflammation in childhood respiratory disease, the role of early viral respiratory infections in the pathogenesis of asthma, and the neurobiology of the developing respiratory tract. Moreover, he has also been a principal (co)investigator of more than 30 research projects funded by the National Institutes of Health and other agencies. Dr. Piedimonte served as a regular member of the Respiratory Integrative Biology and Translational (RIBT) Research Study Section of the U. S. National Institutes of Health Center for Scientific Review and reviews ad hoc for several other granting agencies (NIH, American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, American Heart Association, Department of Veteran Affairs’ Medical Research Service, Canadian Institutes of Health Research). He also holds 17 international patents protecting some of his discoveries.
