Clemens Fürnsinn was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1964. He studied biology (zoology/botany) at the University of Vienna. Exploiting experimental techniques adopted during a stay at the Department of Animal Physiology, University of Groningen, the Netherlands, he made his doctoral thesis in the field of endocrinology at the Medical Faculty in Vienna. After receiving his Ph.D. degree (1990) and a research award from the Hoechst company, he continued his research activities in metabolic physiology and endocrinology as a post-doc. After another foreign experience at the Department of Biochemistry, University of Oxford, UK (1995/96), his efforts focussed for several years on glucose metabolism of skeletal muscle, including physiological aspects of hormone action as well as drug pharmacology (insulin sensitizers). In 2000, he became Associate Professor and more recently, he extended his research activities to more applied topics, which include drug discovery and early preclinical pharmacology in close cooperation with the industry. Clemens Fürnsinn has often served as a chairman at scientific meetings and has a broad experience as reviewer and editorial board member of journals in the endocrinological field, including board membership at Diabetologia since 1998.
