Gerhard Unteregger holds a Ph.D. degree in molecular biology and genetics and serves as extraordinary Professor and Head of the Cell Culture Laboratory in the Department of Urology at the Medical Faculty, University of the Saarland (Homburg/Saar, Germany). His focus is the development of innovative in vivo–like cell culture models like tumor spheroids especially in tumor biology. Dr. Unteregger is Cofounder and President of the German Prostate Cancer Consortium DPKK (www.dpkk.de) and Member of the Working Group Urological Research (AuF as a section of the German Society of Urology DGU). One main topic of his research deals with the molecular changes in castration resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) and the participation of tumor environment during tumor progression. Dr. Unteregger has extensive collaboration with researches at the Second University of Naples (SUN) (Naples, Italy), Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics (Professor M. Caraglia), in the development of nanomodified drugs (ZOL) and their application on 3D prostate cancer cell culture models. Further research activities include the elucidation of molecular mechanisms responsible for drug resistance during therapy in prostate cancer and renal cell carcinoma using 3D coculture systems and models for angiogenesis. Dr. Unteregger performed several wet-lab workshops in modern cell culture technologies like migration, invasion, and angiogenesis. In 2013 Professor Unteregger applied for a visiting professorship at the 2nd university of Naples in the Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics and General Pathology.
