John Provias was born in Toronto in 1955. He obtained his B.S. and Hon B.S. degrees from the University of Toronto (Toronto, ON, Canada) and The University of Western Ontario (London, ON, Canada), respectively, in physiology and neurophysiology. His M.D. degree was from McMaster University, Hamilton, ON, Canada, in 1981. He did his neuropathology residency at the University of Toronto. Since 1997, he has been at McMaster University where he is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine (neuropathology). He is active in running the neuropathology service which is adult, pediatric, and fetal as well as forensic neuropathology. He is also a regional consultant neuropathologist for Niagara/Southwest Ontario and a Member of the Prion Surveillance Program for Health Canada. He is active in neuropathology and allied neuroscience teaching for neurology, pathology, and neurosurgery residents. He has broad interests in clinical and basic neuropathology with more specific research interests in neurooncology, dementias, and developmental neuroscience.
