Van Luu-The has received the Chemistry and Food Industry Engineering degree and the Ph.D. degree from the Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL), Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, in 1976 and 1982, respectively. From 1982 to 1986, he worked as a research fellow with Professor André Goffeau, a Coordinator of the Yeast Genome Project and a Pionner in proton pump research. In 1987, he was a Research Fellow with Professor Fernand Labrie, who is renowned in molecular endocrinoly and prostate cancer treatment. From 1990 to 1997, he was an Assistant Professor at Laval University and a Senior Researcher at Medical Research Council (MRC) Group in Molecular Endocrinology at Laval University Hospital Center (CHUL). Presently, he works as a Full Professor at the Molecular Medicine Department, Faculty of Medicine, Laval University, and a Senior Researcher at the Oncology, Molecular Endocrinology and Human Genomics Research Center and the Quebec University Hospital Center (CHUQ). He is mainly interested in steroid biosynthetic pathways and has purified, cloned, and characterized many enzymes involved in these pathways, including 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases (3β-HSDs), 17β-HSDs, 17a-HSD, 3a-HSDs, 3a(β)-hydroxysteroid epimerase, and sulfotransferases. He is also interested in studying androgen- and estrogen-sensitive diseases.
