The ABCs of Experimental Evolution

Figure 1

This figure is based on one simulation run using mutation probability per genome equal to , transfer time (number of generations allowed within one cycle) equal to 10, and total number of cycles equal to 100. The simulation was run with initial population size and bottleneck of size 1,000,000. Selection coefficients, assigned to each new mutant, were sampled from an exponential distribution with mean equal to 0.1. The figure shows that simulated phage genotypes with identity numbers ID 404 and ID 720 compete with one another and with ID 782. Simulated genotype ID 782 fixes after the 50th cycle and drives both the ID 404 and ID 720 to extinction. Such clonal interference is also evident between simulated genotypes ID 782, ID 2345, and ID 5091.
