Theoretical Analysis and Computational Simulation of Advanced Structured Materials

Call for Papers

Structured materials may be broadly classified as comprising a single phase with an underlying topology or multiple phases in a mixture. Examples include metal foams, multilayers, functionally graded composite materials, and biomaterials such as synthetic bone. Structure can vary in scale, typically from nano to micro, and be hierarchical. Some structured materials comprise both topology and multiple-phase mixtures at different length scales, for example, metal matrix composite foams. In all cases, advanced structured materials are designed to have exceptional properties that cannot be achieved by conventional materials, for example, very high toughness, specific stiffness, multifunction, etc. The knowledge and understanding of these supermaterials rely not only on advanced characterization and processing techniques, but also on progress in theoretical analyses and computational simulations. In this special issue, we are particularly interested in articles describing novel theoretical analyses and realistic computational simulations of advanced structured materials. We therefore invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles in the relevant areas. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Recent progress in theoretical analyses and computational simulations of structured materials
  • Original analysis techniques for assessing structured material performance
  • Realistic computational simulations, including multiscale methods
  • Determination of structural materials’ design specifications for exceptional properties
