Symbiotic Robotics

Call for Papers

The effectiveness of biological symbiosis makes it an appealing design paradigm in human-robot interaction (HRI) contexts characterized by a close physical proximity of biological and artificial agents. Usually, in HRI, robots can be either stiff (machine in charge) or adaptable (machine and human adapt to each other). Recently, a third interaction modality is being more and more recognized, where the human and the machine dynamically interact with each other, giving rise to symbiotic emerging behaviors. Symbiosis is more than coexistence, because the proper coupling of the machine and the human body enhances performance with respect to traditional interaction modalities. We invite authors to submit original research as well as review papers that explore the multifaceted challenges that must be tackled in order to harvest the potential of this Symbiotic Robotics. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Advances in the mechanical design of wearable robots for assistance, rehabilitation, and augmentation
  • Synthesis of structures for human-robot symbiosis
  • Design and experimentation of symbiotic robots
  • Learning and adaptable controllers for unstructured environments
  • Dependability of symbiotic robots
  • Benchmarking of symbiotic behavior
  • Sensing strategies related to symbiotic systems
  • Ergonomics and kinematic compatibility issues in human-robot coupling
  • Tools for modeling physical human-robot interaction
  • Mechanical systems with embodied intelligence
  • Design of compliant and variable impedance actuators
  • Smart energy management and harvesting in symbiotic robots
