The modifications in the velocity and temperature fields in the initial condition due to assimilation of AIRS data. Shown is the case for the run initialized at 18 UTC, 11 September 2008, with LEN_SCALING = 0.5 and VAR_SCALING = 0.2. The vectors are the difference (defined as the outcome of a run with AIRS data minus that of the control run without AIRS) in the velocity at 500 hPa. Color contours are the difference in temperature, and black contours are the sea level pressure of the control run. The blue filled circle indicates the center of typhoon.
