Fabrication of Porous and Nanoporous Aluminum via Selective Dissolution of Al-Zn Alloys

Figure 5

Al-15 at.% Zn alloy quenched in liquid nitrogen solution and freely corroded in 1 wt.% HNO3 solution. Zinc was selectively dissolved creating a porous structure. (a) Aluminum-rich dendrites surrounded by voids. (b) Selective removal of zinc from interdendritic regions creating a primary porosity. (c) Resultant morphology in the walls of passivated aluminum. (d) No nanoporosity was observed in this sample.
