The SEM picture of the waveguide core of a single-section mode-locked semiconductor laser. The corresponding layer composition is given in Figure 1. The roughness of the side wall, especially at the active and passive boundaries, is obvious. The large differential modal loss due to this side wall roughness is important to the multi-spatial-mode mode locking.
