The canonical Wnt pathway for target gene expression. (a) When a WNT ligand is absent, β-catenin is phosphorylated by the Gsk3β complex and is targeted for degradation and there is no gene expression. (b) When a Wnt ligand binds Frizzled, Dsh is activated and inhibits the axin-Gsk3β complex phosphorylating β-catenin enabling it to translocate to the nucleus and can activate TCF which can activate gene expression.
