Note the small branches given off by the ascending artery (1) which are involved in the supply of the lateral aspect of the patella. This ascending artery departs from the lateral inferior genicular artery and anastomoses with the descending branch ((1) in Figure 8) of the superior lateral genicular artery, P: patella.
