Combination of Intensive Chemotherapy and Anticancer Vaccines in the Treatment of Human Malignancies: The Hematological Experience

Induction of immunogenic apoptosis. Certain chemotherapeutics agents (e.g., the anthracyclines) will induce immunogenic apoptosis in cancer cell through induction of Danger-Associated Molecular Patterns (DAMPs). Examples of DAMPs are various Heat shock proteins and ecto-calreticulin exposure on the cancer cell surface. This pattern will induce dendritic cell (DC) maturation with development of specific T helper cell responses and enhancement of cancer-specific T cell cytotoxicity.
