The Lipid Moiety of Haemozoin (Malaria Pigment) and P. falciparum Parasitised Red Blood Cells Bind Synthetic and Native Endothelin-1

Figure 5

Effect of incubation of haemozoin with ET-1 synthetic or produced by HMEC-1. (a) ET-1 (5 fmol/mL) was incubated for 24 hours in the presence of different concentrations of native HZ (black square), delipidized HZ (empty square), or BH (triangle). After incubation the recovery of ET-1 was determined by ELISA. Results represent mean ± SD from three different experiments. (b) HMECs-1 were treated for 24 hours in the presence of different concentration of native HZ (square), BH (triangle) under normoxic (black symbols), or hypoxic conditions (empty symbols). Supernatants were assayed for the presence of ET-1 by ELISA. Results represent mean ± SD from three different experiments.
