Tight Junctions. Tight junctions are the most apical intercellular junctions in epithelial cells. The major molecular components of the tight junctions are the claudins, occludin, and the junctional adhesion molecule (JAM). Tight junction proteins in conjunction with adheren junction proteins (cadherins, catenins) form epithelial cell junctional complexes [26]. The gap junction is located basal to the adheren junction.
