Reevaluating the Role of <i>Acanthamoeba</i> Proteases in Tissue Invasion: Observation of Cytopathogenic Mechanisms on MDCK Cell Monolayers and Hamster Corneal Cells

<table>Adherence of <i>Acanthamoeba</i> spp. to MDCK cells. Trophozoites (7.5 × 10<sup>4</sup>) of <i>A. castellanii </i>(grey circle) and <i>A. polyphaga  </i>(black diamond) were incubated for different times with confluent MDCK epithelial cell monolayers. Adhesion was evaluated by an ELISA-based assay (absorbance of 7.5 × 10<sup>4</sup> trophozoites corresponded to 100%). Assays were performed in triplicate.</table>
