Functional studies (b) revealed that intracellular P. acnes activates NF-κB in a NOD1-dependent manner and the NOD1 796A-allele predominant in sarcoidosis patients causes diminished NF-κB activation in response to intracellular P. acnes. Western blot analysis (a) shows reduced expression of the NOD1 796A-allele.
