Signalling Molecules in the Urothelium

The urothelium is composed of superficial umbrella cells, intermediate cells, and basal cells. Beneath the urothelium there is suburothelial connective tissue termed lamina propria, which contains various types of cells (e.g., fibroblasts, interstitial cells, and myofibroblasts) and afferent nerve terminals. The outermost layer is the detrusor smooth muscle cell layer.
