Effect of PTU-induced hypothyroidism and its reversal by T₃ upon oxidative damage to mitochondrial membrane lipids. (a) Endogenous membrane lipid peroxidation (TBARS formed) in submitochondrial particles (SMP) isolated from liver of rats. (b) In vitro oxidant-induced TBARS level for which SMP were incubated without any oxidant and with H₂O₂ (600 nmol/mg protein) and tert-butyl hydroperoxide (600 nmol/mg protein), respectively, for 1 h at 37°C prior to TBARS determination.
