Four distinct categories of oocyte maturation were identified: (1) one nucleolus present in the nucleus; (2) multiple nucleoli present and lipid droplets in the cytoplasm; (3) VTG globules in the periphery of the cytoplasm or layered in the zona radiata; (4) oocyte is large, full of VTG, with a nucleus at the oocyte periphery (or nucleus not visible due to slicing).
