Muscle Hypertonia

Call for Papers

Muscle hypertonia, often referred to as muscular rigidity or stiffness, can arise due to a number of pathological conditions of the central nervous system. Manifestations can vary from spasticity (velocity-dependent), to parkinsonian-like rigidity (velocity-independent), to oppositional paratonia. While neurologists often perform clinical evaluations to test for the presence of these manifestations, the pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying muscle hypertonia remain in many cases elusive and underexplored. Apart from spastic rigidity, where many human and animal studies helped shed light on the affected spinal circuitry, relatively few data have addressed the other types of muscular hypertonia. Since muscle hypertonia can usually be considered the epiphenomenon of imbalanced neural activity within the central nervous system, a better understanding of the mechanisms responsible is crucial to developing a treatment that takes into account the underlying pathological condition.

We invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles, from basic to applied research, that will help increase our understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the different types of muscle hypertonia, with the ultimate goal of improving clinical outcomes. All studies whether using neurophysiological, biomechanical, or other approaches to investigate muscle hypertonia and associated clinical conditions will be considered. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Hypertonicity, including spasticity and involuntary coactivation, following upper motor neuron disorders (trauma, stroke, demyelinating, and degenerative diseases)
  • Parkinsonian rigidity
  • Dystonia
  • Paratonia both of oppositional (gegenhalten) and facilitatory types
  • Rigidity of neuroleptic malignant syndrome and serotoninergic syndrome
  • Increased tone related to stiff person syndrome
  • Other causes of increased muscle tonus, even related primarily to neuromuscular disorders
  • Cerebral palsy and other conditions accompanied by increased muscle tone in pediatric patients
