Contaminants of Emerging Concern: From the Detection to Their Effects on Human Health

Description

In the past years with the advance of analytical instrumentation/methods, some chemicals are being discovered in water and other environmental matrices that previously had not been noticed or are being detected at levels that may be diverse more than expected. These are often generally referred to as “contaminants of emerging concern” because the potential risk to human health and the environment associated with their presence, frequency of occurrence, or source may not be known. Some of these compounds include household and industrial chemicals such as flame retardants, plasticizers, detergent compounds, pharmaceutical and personal care products, fragrances, antimicrobial cleaning agents, nanomaterials, and some toxic elements.

We invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles that will stimulate the continuing efforts to understand the behavior of contaminants of emerging concern in the environment and human body as well as the adverse effects and toxicological mechanisms associated with the exposure to these compounds.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Mechanisms of toxicity of contaminants of emerging concern
  • Analytical methods for the determination and human biomonitoring of contaminants of emerging concern
  • Reproductive and developmental toxicology of contaminants of emerging concern
  • Neurotoxicology and cardiovascular toxicology associated with the exposure to contaminants of emerging concern
  • Biotransformation and bioremediation products: detection and toxicity
  • Ecotoxicological studies
  • Risk assessment and exposure in the workplace
  • Gene/environment interactions
  • Omics tools in toxicology studies of contaminants of emerging concern
