Mass Spectrometry Applications in Biomedical Research

Description

With the tremendous advances of modern mass spectrometry (MS) techniques, MS has become one of the essential analytical tools to biological and biomedical research. Mass spectrometry provides rapid and sensitive qualitative and quantitative analysis of biomolecules (proteins, peptides, oligosaccharides, lipids, DNA, and RNA), drugs, and metabolites. In combination with a variety of modern separation technologies, MS has been successfully applied to high-throughput proteomewide analysis of proteins, protein-protein interactions, and protein posttranslational modifications (PTMs) in cells, tissues, or organs. In the past several years, we have also witnessed fast growth in metabolomics and tissue imaging fueled by MS analysis. The wide implementation of MS certainly has resulted in and will continuously benefit in the advancement of indepth understanding of biological processes and their underlying molecular mechanisms. In terms of biomarker discovery for many human diseases and therapeutics, MS-based proteomics and metabolomics are playing an important role and the application of MS to clinical molecular diagnosis will be expected in the near future. Potential topics in a variety of method development and applications of MS in biological and biomedical research include, but are not limited to:

  • Proteome profile and/or quantitative proteomic studies (stable isotopic labeling, label free, and MRM)
  • Protein PTM characterization; Omics of PTMs (phosphoproteome, glycoproteome, acetylome, methylproteome, etc.)
  • MS-based biomarker discovery and/or validation
  • Metabolomics
  • MS in pharmacology and toxicology
