Advances in Emerging and Neglected Infectious Diseases
Description
Despite a low incidence of disease, emerging and neglected infections have proven to be highly lethal with mortality rates ranging within 10–80%. There are numerous infectious diseases waiting in the wings for the evolutionary or nefarious alteration that will allow them to spread readily amongst the human population leaving death and devastation in their wake. Much research focus is devoted to infections with a well-recognized public health impact; however, we cannot ignore pathogens that currently have low incidences of disease as these are just the pathogens that could cause the next epidemic.
We invite investigators to contribute original research articles and review articles that present recent advances in understanding emerging, neglected, and tropical infectious diseases. Submission would be accepted from all fields related to studies of infectious diseases, including, but not limited to: pathogenicity, vaccine development, therapeutics, epidemiology and public health management. A particular interest will be given to papers that advance knowledge toward treatments and management.
Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:
- Emerging zoonoses, tropical diseases, and neglected infections
- Pathogenesis mechanisms of emerging infections with particular emphasis given to novel mechanisms or existing mechanisms that are demonstrated for the first time to be shared by multiple infections
- Novel immunological responses attributed to infections with particular emphasis given to pathological immune responses
- Molecular studies that identify possible vaccine epitopes or targets for drug development
- New associations of diseases with existing described symptomology
- Basic science, translational medicine, and clinical research
