Public Health Management of Leprosy Control

Call for Papers

Mycobacterium leprae (M. leprae), the causative agent of leprosy, remains a public health concern in endemic countries since it causes disability and deformity. Although leprosy prevalence has reportedly declined globally, an increased burden over recent years has raised concerns if such a decline was due to changes in data management. Maintenance of cases in children and the diagnosis of new cases with visible deformity in Brazil, India, and Indonesia along with reemergence in other countries provide evidence of reduced programme efficiency. The key to control the disease can be found in the better understanding of host immune responses to M. leprae, as well as improvement of therapy and public health tools. We invite authors to submit original research and review articles that report on all public health aspects to control the disease. We are interested in articles that explore aspects of controlling and eliminating this disease. Potential topics include, but not limited to:

  • Initiatives to reduce disease burden
  • Epidemiology of leprosy in children
  • Development of biomarkers and other initiatives for early detection.
  • Changing clinical profile in the postelimination era
  • Strategies for reduction of disabilities and stigma
  • Chemotherapy: options and effectiveness of existing and emerging therapies
  • New technologies to study host immune response to M. leprae and implications of their application
  • Surveillance of drug resistance, relapse, and reemergence
  • Vaccine development and its public health implications

Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal’s Author Guidelines, which are located at http://www.hindawi.com/journals/bmri/guidelines/. Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their complete manuscript through the journal Manuscript Tracking System at http://mts.hindawi.com/submit/journals/bmri/infectious.diseases/mlc/ according to the following timetable:
