Trabecular Bone and Strength

Call for Papers

Trabecular bone is a cellular solid with substantial heterogeneity in structure and mechanical behavior, making it a very interesting and challenging tissue to investigate. Many factors such as age, gender, anatomic site, and disease affect the ability of trabecular bone to support load. Additionally, many parameters govern the ability of trabecular bone to support load. These parameters, lumped together qualitatively as bone quality, consist of bone density, architecture, mineralization, turnover, damage accumulation, and collagen cross-linking. The relationship of trabecular bone strength with bone quality is not fully understood, given the large variability in data and the appropriate means to collect clinically relevant data. To that end, this paper aims to compile the state of the art in trabecular bone density, architecture, mineralization, turnover, damage accumulation, and collagen cross-linking and their effect on its strength. Additionally, it aims to outline the current testing, modeling, and imaging modalities used in the field to do so.

Original research papers and reviews focusing on elucidating the effects of bone quality components on trabecular bone strength, modes of trabecular failure, and means of assessing and modeling bone strength in humans and relevant nonhuman models are solicited for this call. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Trabecular bone density, architecture, mineralization, turnover, damage, and collagen cross-linking
  • Elastic behavior, postyield behavior, damage accumulation, failure modes, and in situ versus in vitro mechanical behavior
  • Imaging (MRI and CT), finite element analysis, mechanical testing protocols used to assess/model strength of bone
