Neurodegeneration: Etiologies and New Therapies 2016

Description

Neurodegeneration is seen in many nervous system disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, cerebral stroke, Huntington’s disease, and several other neurological conditions. These diseases have devastating effects on patients and are often accompanied by tremendous physical and emotional burden not only for the patients but also for their families and friends. Not only are these disorders amongst the most costly diseases to society but also their increasing prevalence poses a serious public health problem. Just three decades ago very little was known about the causes of neurodegeneration. However, several breakthroughs in recent years have provided some notable insights. Although substantial progress has been made, more detailed studies are needed to understand the cause and molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration in order to identify potential targets and to provide corrective interventions in addition to supportive treatments.

In this special issue, we invite investigators to contribute original research articles and reviews exploring molecular mechanism of neurodegeneration, new diagnostic tools, and innovative approaches for treatment.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • New in vivo and in vitro models to study neurodegeneration
  • Development and validation of biomarkers to improve the diagnosis
  • New risk factors for neurodegenerative diseases
  • Neurochemistry and/or molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration
  • New therapeutic targets for treatment
  • Stem cell and gene-based therapies in neurodegenerative disorders
