Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, is a relapsing and remitting condition characterized by chronic inflammation of the digestive tract, which results in various intestinal and extraintestinal symptoms. With the advancement of basic, translational, and clinical research, understanding and management of IBD have greatly progressed. The exact cause of IBD still remains unknown, but research shows that genetic, immunological, and environmental factors play a role in the initiation, perpetuation, and perturbation of the disease process. The imbalance of the gut microbiome has recently been linked to IBD, and fecal microbiota transplantation has emerged as a potential therapy. Clinical management has greatly changed in the past decade by the development of anticytokine-based biologic treatment, and the treatment goals are now to achieve mucosal healing and alter the natural course of the disease. To promote the basic and clinical research field in IBD, we invite investigators to contribute original research articles as well as review articles that will stimulate continuing efforts to understand the mechanisms and management of IBD.
