Yeast Genetic and Metabolic Engineering in Biotechnology
Call for Papers
Diverse yeast species including conventional Saccharomyces cerevisiae and nonconventional Pichia pastoris, Hansenula polymorpha, Yarrowia lipolytica, Kluyveromyces lactis, and others are widely used in biotechnology for production of various metabolites and recombinant proteins. In some cases, yeasts are not ideal cell factories. There are problems hampering the production of metabolites and high yield of properly modified and active recombinant proteins. For example, activity of the heterologous proteins is often negatively affected by undesired host-specific modifications (e.g., hypermannosylation) or absence of proper modifications specific for the given protein in the original organism. One of the powerful approaches to improve biotechnological potential of yeasts is their genetic modification by random mutagenesis. Availability of various omics and bioinformatic tools in the postgenomic era promotes the development of more efficient strategy —a rationale genetic engineering of yeasts based on systems biology approach.
We invite investigators to contribute original research articles and reviews on genetic engineering of various yeasts as hosts for production of heterologous proteins or metabolites having diverse applications in fundamental research or applied sciences. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- Identification of problems hampering production of heterologous proteins and metabolites
- Methods and approaches for genetic manipulation of yeast cells
- Assembly of artificial biochemical pathways
- Engineering of simple genomes in yeasts
- Yeast synthetic biology
- Yeasts in industrial biotechnology
- Yeasts for production of pharmaceutical proteins
- Yeasts as biocatalysts for production of metabolites
- Genetically modified yeasts in food industry
