Pain Management in the Perioperative Period: Mechanism and Therapies

Call for Papers

Pain management in the perioperative period refers to the actions intended to reduce or eliminate pain before, during, and after surgery, until the normal healing period is completed. Anesthesiologists have shown an exceptional level of expertise in this area and recently investigations have focused on addressing basic pharmacologic mechanisms, neuropharmacology for pain, reasons for the insufficient pain relief, inadequate response to analgesics, and new modalities to treat such pain. Although most perioperative pain management interventions are symptomatic, several strategies can reduce and even prevent pain in the perioperative setting.

This special edition invites investigators to contribute original research as well as review articles to present the common understanding of surgical /traumatic pain and mechanisms based treatment strategies to improve perioperative pain relief, increase patient satisfaction, and optimize the overall outcome of surgical patients. We encourage articles that are intended to serve a wide variety of surgical and trauma patients and provide useful guidance for anesthesiologists working in a variety of settings. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Neurobiology of nociception
  • Mechanism leading to persistent postsurgical pain
  • Pharmacology of different analgesics
  • Intraoperative pain relief, conventional versus interventional
  • Concepts of preemptive analgesia
  • Principles of multimodal analgesia
  • Pathophysiology of inadequate pain relief
  • New modalities /technology in interventional pain management
  • Nonpharmacological treatment
  • Outcome measures in postoperative pain trails
  • Patient’s education and psychological therapy

Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal’s Author Guidelines, which are located at http://www.hindawi.com/journals/bmri/guidelines/. Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their complete manuscript through the journal Manuscript Tracking System at http://mts.hindawi.com/submit/journals/bmri/anesthesiology/ppp/ according to the following timetable:
