Microbial Bioactive Peptides: Bioprocessing Aspects and Applications

Call for Papers

The bioeconomy is globally booming these days, and the bioproducts and associated bioprocesses are the main contributors to this new bioeconomy. Bioactive peptides of various sources constitute an important class of bioproducts due to their great variety and wide range of applications such as food, pharmaceutical, and medical fields. At present, one of the major drawbacks on the road to commercial production of bioactive peptides is lack of suitable large-scale bioprocess technologies for the cost-effective production and purification of biopeptides. Therefore, this special issue will invite papers dealing with a wide range of microbial bioactive peptides, bioprocess engineering, and microbial metabolic engineering.

We particularly interested in manuscripts that report on approaches for improved production yields, on downstream processing aspects, and on scale-up studies. Research and review manuscripts on the microbial conversion and/or production of bioactive peptides using the recombinant DNA technology, enzymatic technology, and other means of metabolic engineering or bioprocessing are welcome. Moreover, manuscripts dealing specifically with optimal peptide gene expression or fermentation production conditions would be of great interest. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

• New sources/next generations of bioactive peptides
• Improved fermentation protocols
• Production scale-up methods
• Novel gene expression/production approaches
• Molecular characteristics/mechanism of bioactive peptides
• Metabolic engineering approaches
• Animal and human bioassays
• Facile peptide recovery and purification
• Novel applications
