Biological Effects of Mammalian Translationally Controlled Tumor Protein (TCTP) on Cell Death, Proliferation, and Tumorigenesis

Figure 1

TCTP protects cells from cell death. TCTP inhibits cell death induced by oxidative stress, heat shock, or influx of Ca2+. In addition, TCTP can protect cells from apoptosis triggered by treatment with genotoxic reagent such as etoposide and 5-fluorouracil. TCTP inhibits apoptosis by stabilizing antiapoptotic Bcl-2 family proteins, MCL1 and Bcl-xL and by inhibiting activation of proapoptotic Bcl-2 family protein, Bax. Moreover, TCTP inhibits p53-dependent apoptosis by downregulating the protein.
