Cholesterol depletion destroys the morphology of caveolae. (a) In an intact FDB myofiber, there are abundantly flask-shaped caveolae that form rosettes (marked by arrowheads) beneath the sarcolemma. (b) Treatment with 1 mM CDX reduces the number of caveolae, and the morphology of individual caveolae (arrowheads) is distorted.
