Neurophysiological experiments. (a) Conditional visuomotor task design. At each trial, the stimulus was presented at the centre of the screen (i.e., the warning stimulus) for a delay ranging from 0.75 to 2.25 seconds, in steps of 0.25 seconds (i.e., variable foreperiod paradigm). After stimulus offset (the instructive stimulus), the monkey had to execute the associated joystick movement to obtain reward.
