This is shown for part of the medial condyle. The local 𝑥𝑦-plane is parallel to the cartilage-bone interface. The corresponding shear stresses for the strains are 𝜏_𝑧𝑥 and 𝜏_𝑧𝑦, which are parallel to the interface.
