Discovery and Validation of Potential Drug Targets

Call for Papers

New drug research has presented two major trends: on the one hand, to seek and find some new drugs with higher activity and lower toxicity based on known pharmacological mechanism; on the other hand, to discover new medicines based on new targets. But the drug target still has to become the bottleneck of drug discovery, despite that the targets for the current clinical medication are more than 500. This accounts for only a very small part because there are about more than 6000 “druggable” target genes in the human genome. Therefore, discovery and validation of potential drug targets are very important, in favor of new drug discovery with new molecular mechanism of action, which can help to improve the efficiency of drug discovery. Here, we sincerely invite authors to share their perspective on the discovery and validation of potential drug targets and application to new drug discovery. Original and novel scientific articles in basic and applied research as well as review articles are welcome in this special issue. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Discovery of drug targets based on network-based modeling
  • Screen and identification of “druggable” targets based on a systems level approach
  • Discovery and identification of drug targets based on traditional Chinese medicines
  • Discovery of drug targets based on microarrays and functional genomic screens
  • Deconvolution of drug targets based on chemistry-based functional proteomics
  • Discovery and identification of drug targets based on role of mitochondria
  • Discovery and identification of drug targets based on NMR and protein crystallography
  • Overcoming the drug resistance especially targeting cancer stem cells
  • Epigenetic regulation protein complex and pharmacological inhibitor design to epigenetic regulators
  • Rational drug design
