Discrete Analysis of Social Networks and Societies
Call for Papers
Due to the tremendous increase in the number of active users of online social websites, mobile smart phones, and instant messaging systems in recent years, social network analysis (SNA) has been a hot research topic with growing attention from both academia and industry. SNA has emerged as a key technique in modern sociology and aims to study sociological connections in social networks and societies using graph-theoretic concepts. Recent developments in this area lead to a better understanding of modern societies and modern world that is more dynamic and more intelligent than yesterday.
A fundamental problem related to these social networks is the discovery of clusters or communities. The discovery of communities, community leaders, influencers, and so forth is a key process especially in large-scale SNA. A significant challenge in this area is that of scalability, among others. Unfortunately, it is in the nature of the analysis entailed in many discrete SNA algorithms that they do not scale well to very large graphs, considering many real-world social networks which may have more than a few hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of nodes.
The aim of this special issue is to present the original research and review articles on the latest theoretical, numerical, and practical achievements that will contribute to the field of analysis and modeling of social networks and societies. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- Clustering of (large-scale) social networks
- Finding communities and/or influencers, leaders in online or offline social networks
- Discrete modeling of social relationships in (large-scale) social networks
- Scalability of social networks
- Clique relaxations in SNA
- Discrete large-scale graph algorithms for SNA
