Colonic Capsule Endoscopy
Call for Papers
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most frequent cause of cancer-related death in western countries. Nevertheless, no more than 25% of compliance has been achieved in screening programs, mainly because of people's resistance to conventional colonoscopy, so that noninvasive techniques have being evaluated as alternatives to conventional colonoscopy in order to improve the compliance to screening programs. In this sense the high-priority objective of the colonic capsule endoscopy (CCE) is the colorectal cancer screening in the risk population. It is a noninvasive and easy tool to manage, so it is an advantage compared to conventional colonoscopy. Therefore, it may be a means to overcome the low adherence to colorectal cancer screening. Several studies have pointed out the effectiveness of the CCE compared to colonoscopy in the study of the colonic pathology, especially in the colon cancer screening. The CCE is similar to the conventional capsule but has two cameras which are able to record video images from both ends. The device measures 31 by 11 mms and acquires images at a rate of 4 frames per second. The preprogrammed “sleep” mode allows recording of images from the esophagus and the stomach for 3 minutes and after that capsule switches to sleep mode for 1 hour 45 minutes, so that it saves battery. During this period, the capsule is likely to transit most of the small bowel and reaches approximately the level of terminal ileum. In order to improve the technique a second generation of PillCam Colon (PCC2) has been developed. The angle of view has been increased to 172 degrees. It has an adaptive frame rate, alternating from 35 frames per second while in motion to 4 images when virtually stationary.
We invite investigators to submit original research articles as well as review articles that will better define the role of colonic capsule endoscopy in colon cancer screening, uncompleted conventional colonoscopy, and efficacy of the technique. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- Overview of colonic capsule endoscopy
- Indications for colonic capsule endoscopy
- How to improve the preparation for colonic capsule endoscopy?
- Results of the studies recently published
- Future of the colonic capsule endoscopy
- How to improve the efficacy?
Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal's Author Guidelines, which are located at http://www.hindawi.com/journals/dte/guidelines/. Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their complete manuscript through the journal Manuscript Tracking System at http://mts.hindawi.com/ according to the following timetable:
| Manuscript Due | Friday, 20 July 2012 |
| First Round of Reviews | Friday, 12 October 2012 |
| Publication Date | Friday, 7 December 2012 |
