Synergism Effect of the Essential Oil from Ocimum basilicum var. Maria Bonita and Its Major Components with Fluconazole and Its Influence on Ergosterol Biosynthesis
Figure 7
Transmission electron microscopy of C. albicans fluconazole resistant strain treated with FLC alone (1 μg/mL) and combined with geraniol (38 μg/mL) and EO (156 μg/mL); the latter two trails with FLC exhibited synergistic activity. The treatment with 1 μg/mL of FLC showed cells with irregularity in their membranes and formation of small vesicles in the proximity (a-b). In the treatment with the combination of essential oil 156 μg/mL and FLC 1 μg/mL, the cells demonstrated a very thick cell wall and membrane invaginations (c-d). Cells treated with the combination of geraniol 38 μg/mL and FLC 1 μg/mL showed extensive irregularities in the membrane and formation of membrane vesicles in the cytoplasm (e-f).
