The Synergistic Role of Herbal Mixture in Therapy: Standardization and Signaling Mechanism

Call for Papers

One of the common practices of herbal medicine is to formulate different herbs together as a mixture: the mixed herbs have been used all over the world for a long history, especially in Asia. It is generally accepted that disease is caused by multiple pathological factors, as well as different stages of the disease. Although drug development is under a rapid development, many types of diseases are still difficult to be cured by a synthetic drug targeting a signal target. On the other hand, the poor selectivity of synthetic medicines usually leads to various side effects. Under these circumstances, herbal mixtures, having multiple compounds and drug targets, have acquired a lot of attention. By combining different herbs together, the therapeutic effects and scope of herbal mixtures are usually strengthened and broadened, while the side effect or toxicity is being reduced. However, there are obstacles for wide acceptance of herbal mixture. First, the quality of herbs always fluctuates, and the effectiveness is hard to be guaranteed. The potent quality control method is difficult to be developed due to the multicompounds. Second, the action mechanism of herbal mixture is difficult to be delineated for the multitargets. The possible synergistic effects have not been clearly elucidated.

To solve these questions and promote the study of herbal mixtures, we are interested in research on the development of potent quality control method and the elucidation of action mechanism of herbal mixtures. Here, we invite authors to submit original research and review articles on these areas. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Development of quality control method of herbal mixtures, in particular the application of systems biology
  • Elucidation of action mechanism of herbal mixtures
  • Comparison of action differences of single herb and those in herbal mixtures
  • Elucidation of role of herb pairs in herbal mixture
  • Determination of the relationship of dosage and effect of herbal pairs in herbal mixtures
  • Determination of the role of active compounds in herbal mixtures
