Role of Natural Products in Ameliorating Drugs and Chemicals Toxicity

Description

Drugs’ and chemicals’ toxicity is a common crisis in human and animals. Overdosing and drug abuse are the main issues of toxicity. Pesticides, water pollution with heavy metals, and veterinary drug residues constitute the high incidence of reported cases of toxicities. Besides, toxins from different origin as mycotoxines and microbial toxins including food poisoning organisms can affect human and animals.

There is an increasing worldwide demand for ethnobotanical preparations as they have wide acceptance by consumers and are safe for the environment. Moreover, they are used to protect the body and improve the immune system, without the untoward effects commonly associated with synthetic chemical agents. Many medicinal herbs and their active ingredients, such as flavonoids and polyphenolic compounds (proanthocyanidins, cinnamic acids, curcumin, berberine, etc.), have been studied extensively by using various toxicological animal models. Targeting of the mechanisms by these agents remains the primary focus for several diseases and toxicities.

This special issue is dedicated to integrate past and present use of plants reporting traditional/folk medicinal use. Researchers are invited to submit original research and review articles on a range of topics to explore the pharmacotoxicological mechanisms of phyto-products and their active constituents for prevention and treatment of drugs’ and chemicals’ toxicity.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • The therapeutic application of dietary supplements against drugs and chemicals toxicity
  • Natural products in the development of drugs to overcome toxicities
  • Separation and identification of active constituents of high antioxidant efficacy
  • Polyphenols from foods for prevention of drugs and chemicals toxicity
  • Elucidation of mechanism of phytochemicals that have antidotal activity
  • Herb-drug interaction and herb-chemical interaction and their mechanism
