The Roles of the Paf1 Complex and Associated Histone Modifications in Regulating Gene Expression

The multiple functions of the Paf1C. During transcription elongation, the Paf1C (a) associates with RNA pol II on coding regions [4, 6], (b) regulates histone modifications [812] (discussed in detail in Figure 2), and (c) recruits Chd1, an ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling enzyme [131, 132]. (d) During a later stage of transcription elongation, the Paf1C promotes phosphorylation of serine 2 of the RNA pol II CTD [13, 31]. (e) Additionally, the Paf1C is important for proper transcription termination and RNA 3′ end formation of both polyadenylated and nonpolyadenylated transcripts [1316, 31].
