Probiotic Interference of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and Lactobacillus reuteri RC-14 with the Opportunistic Fungal Pathogen Candida albicans

Figure 3

Growth inhibition of C. albicans by culture supernatants from probiotic lactobacilli. Cell-free culture supernatants of L. rhamnosus GR-1 and L. reuteri RC-14 were collected after 48 hrs of growth and adjusted to pH 4.5 and pH 6.8 using sodium hydroxide. Varying amounts of the supernatants were added to MRS media inoculated with C. albicans in microtiter plates (total volume per well 200 μL). After incubation at 37°C for 24 hrs, the cell densities were determined by readings. The inhibitory effect of the supernatants at low pH was lost at pH 6.8. Error bars show the standard deviations of at least triplicate experiments.
