Structure of a gramicidin peptide. The generalized structure of several gramicidins is O=CH-L-X-Gly-L-Ala-D-Leu-L-Ala-D-Val-L-Val-D-Val-L-Trp-D-Leu-L-Y-D-Leu-L-Trp-D-Leu-L-Trp-NCH2CH2OH. Two gramicidin peptides coil as shown schematically to give an ion-conducting pore within the bilayer. X and Y indicate variability in the peptide sequence.
